---------------

Introduction

Fairouz is a legendary Lebanese vocalist, one of the most deeply respected living singers in the Arab world. She was born in 1934. Her singing career began in the 1950's, and she achieved stardom in the 1960's. Her husband, Assi Rahbani, and his brother Mansour Rahbani achieved legendary status as due of composer and lyricist. The three worked closely together from the 1950's through 1979, with Fairouz's beautiful voice turning many of their compositions into hits.

Although Fairouz performed many debke songs during her career, only one of those is included on this page ("Shatti Ya Dunya"). That's because debke is a different dance style from belly dance, and this page is intended to focus on songs that could be used for belly dance. An exception was made for "Shatti Ya Dunya" because so many made-for-belly-dance music albums include it.

Fairouz' name is also sometimes spelled as "Feiruz", "Feirouz", "Feyrouz", "Fayrouz", "Fairoz", or "Fairuz".

La Gardienne des Clés

This song was composed by the Rahbani Brothers. Throughout Fairouz' career, she has done extensive live theater work, particularly stage musicals. Her husband Assi Rahbani and his brother Mansour Rahbani produced 25 popular musical plays over a 30-year period. One of those, which was performed in 1972, was titled La Gardienne des Clés. Its overture is sometimes used by belly dancers for performances.

Shatti Ya Dunya

This song was composed by the Rahbani Brothers, and is meant for dancing debke. I haven't included Fairouz' other debke songs on this page, but because this one appears on so many albums intended for belly dancers, I decided to make an exception for it. The lyrics translation appears elsewhere on this web site.
