About this Song

This song uses Greek lyrics to the melody of a 1997 song in Arabic that was originally sung by Natacha Atlas (Νατάσα Άτλας) and Sawt el Atlas (Σαουτ ελ Ατλας). Τhe song is called "Amulet" (Αμυλετ), from the album Halim. The lyrics for the Arabic version were written by Natacha Atlas, Alex Kasiek, Count Dubulah, Alex Kasiek, Lee Hamilton, Nick Page and Hamid Mantu.

Regarding the composer of the music, reputable sources give conflicting information. Some list Alex Kasiek, Natacha Atlas, Lee Hamilton, and Nick Page. Others list only one or two of these names.

  1. "My eyes!" is an exclamation in Greek and Arabic.
  2. This means "Why are you making me suffer?" or "Why are you playing with my affections?"
  3. This is talking about the relationship, but using lights as a metaphor - turn the light on, reconnect electricity, etc.
  4. This means that the other person's touch overcomes the logic.
  5. This is like a stage curtain dropping. In other words, it's saying the relationship keeps going, in the same way a play keeps going until the closing curtain.

About the Translator

This page was contributed by Panayiota Bakis, who is happy to share her culture and music she grew up with! Here's how Panayiota describes her background:

I always love engaging with intelligent like-minded people, especially artists. I love sharing anything and everything about my Hellenic culture and upbringing, especially music and dance. A conversation with me will bring you back to America's favorite Greek-American movie by Nia Vardalos called My Big Fat Greek Wedding.

I love investigating Greek culture, history, music, and dance. Speaking of investigating, I think I missed my calling, I probably should have been an investigator. Instead, I use those skills to dig and dig and dig tirelessly, often times falling asleep on my laptop... just to find the truth. But, most importantly, accurate truth. For me personally, and other respectable folklorists, my culture and accuracy are very important. Each generation of ethnic born artists has a duty to do the best it can to pass down our traditions as was taught to us. We have been given this artistic gift to be the gatekeepers of our heritage and culture.
