About this Song

This song was originally recorded in Spanish by the singer Shakira (Σακίρα) in 1998 as "Ojos Así". Her real name is Isabel Mebarak Ripoll (Ιζαμπέλα Μεμπάρακ Ριπόλ). Her mother is Colombian and her father Lebanese (born in South America). Shakira's mother raised her as a single mother, and she only saw her father (who was married to another woman) a few times per year. Therefore, she was not raised as part of his family, or as part of the Lebanese community in South America. After she became famous, he finally introduced her to his family and publicly acknowledged her.

Shakira incorporates some belly dance movements into the dancing she does for her music videos and performances. Her choreographer is a dancer named Bozenka who used to perform with the Bellydance Superstars dance company.

In 2001, this song was released with English lyrics under the title "Eyes Like Yours". "Ojos Así" contains segments of chanting in Arabic. It is based in the Phrygian dominant scale to give the song more of an Arabic feel.

ABOUT THE PHOTO: The photo shows Shakira, the artist who popularized the original Spanish and English versions of this song.

  1. In the context of this song, the word "wanted" is used to mean the same thing as being on law enforcement's "wanted" list, or on a "wanted" poster. "Katazitite" can also refer to the romantic meaning of wanting someone, but that's not how it's being used in these song lyrics.

About the Translator

This page was contributed by Panayiota Bakis, who is happy to share her culture and music she grew up with! Here's how Panayiota describes her background:

I always love engaging with intelligent like-minded people, especially artists. I love sharing anything and everything about my Hellenic culture and upbringing, especially music and dance. A conversation with me will bring you back to America's favorite Greek-American movie by Nia Vardalos called My Big Fat Greek Wedding.

I love investigating Greek culture, history, music, and dance. Speaking of investigating, I think I missed my calling, I probably should have been an investigator. Instead, I use those skills to dig and dig and dig tirelessly, often times falling asleep on my laptop... just to find the truth. But, most importantly, accurate truth. For me personally, and other respectable folklorists, my culture and accuracy are very important. Each generation of ethnic born artists has a duty to do the best it can to pass down our traditions as was taught to us. We have been given this artistic gift to be the gatekeepers of our heritage and culture.
